Tuina Massage for the Lower Extremities Video on DVD – Bill Helm
Tuina, the oldest known system of therapeutic massage, has its roots in China, dating back to 2300 B.C. As one of the five major therapies of its time, Tuina has been practiced and refined over centuries. Today, it remains a vital and structured system, taught at major traditional Chinese medical colleges alongside acupuncture and herbal medicine. Tuina practitioners receive the same rigorous training as acupuncturists, earning them the same level of respect in the professional community.
Grounded in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Tuina focuses on the channels and collaterals (meridians) and the flow of Qi energy within the body. The goal of Tuina is to balance and harmonize Qi through targeted massage and manipulation, enabling the body’s natural healing abilities. This system includes hand and arm techniques to manipulate the muscles and tendons, acupressure for stimulating Qi flow, and various manipulation techniques to realign musculoskeletal and ligamentous structures (bone setting). Additionally, herbal poultices, compresses, liniments, and salves are often employed to enhance the therapeutic effects.
Tuina is an excellent complement to Swedish massage, as it focuses on specific problems rather than a generalized treatment approach. It can be applied in short, effective sessions in various settings, including at home, in the office, clinic, or hospital. This makes Tuina massage suitable for both professional massage therapists and health-conscious individuals looking to improve their well-being. Over the centuries, Tuina has proven its effectiveness, with a well-documented theory and a rich history of accomplishment.
