Instructor

Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa, or KP as he is known, is the author of Body Balance and The Way of Ayurvedic Herbs, as well as co-author of Herbal Defense. He has written over 200 articles and has been studying and teaching Ayurvedic treatments for over 30 years.

Ayurvedic texts analyze the human body in terms of earth, water, fire, air, and ether as well as the three bodily humours (wind, bile, and phlegm). To prevent illness, Ayurvedic medicine emphasizes hygiene, exercise, herbal preparations, and yoga. To cure ailments, it relies on herbal medicines, physiotherapy, and diet. Ayurvedic medicine is still a popular form of health care in India, where it is taught in roughly 100 colleges, and it has gained currency in the West as a form of alternative medicine.

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurvedic medicine that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead (the 'third eye'). It was developed by practitionars of Ayurveda in Kerala, India for use in restorative therapy. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiras 'head' and dhara 'flow'. The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water. It has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménire's disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties.
